A "Vätte" is a creature living in the mountains and underneath the hills.
Vättar has made itself known to sabotage anything that encroaches on their domains.
The Severe and unexplained problems of the tunnel construction called "Hallandsåsen" in Sweden is one example in modern days. Most likely caused by vättar.
People mostly says that a "vätte" looks like a Gnome.
But for me personally I always related vättar (who live in the mountains) with goblin-like creatures rather than Gnomes.
